About

Objective

The main goal of this summer school is to introduce the theory of Euclidean lattices with the focus on their applications in cryptography. In the first series of lectures, Prof. Dr. Alexander May will introduce the audience to the topic of Cryptanalysis via Representations. In the second series of lectures, Prof. Dr. Damien Stehlé will talk about computationally hard problems on lattices and how these problems can be used to build cryptographic primitives.

Cryptanalysis via Representations (Prof. A. May)

We will discuss certain elementary cryptanalysis techniques like Meet-in-the-Middle, Cycle Finding and Parallel Collision Search. We will then study how the use of different representations of a single solution in combination with these techniques helps to improve algorithms for the subset sum and decoding problem.

Lattice-based cryptography (Prof. D. Stehlé)

This lecture series will introduce the audience to the theory of Euclidean lattices and associated hard problems. Lattice-basis reduction algorithms will be covered next. Constructing modern cryptographic primitives based on the Learning with Errors problem and the Short Interger Solution problem will be discussed in the last lectures.

Format

The school starts on the 15th Monday morning and ends on the 19th Friday afternoon. There are two lecturers at the school. Each of them gives one lecture of duration ~1h30 per day. Both lectures are scheduled for mornings with a short break between them. After a joint lunch, tutorial sessions each of duration ~1h15min will be offered. During this tutorial session, the lecturers will offer exercises related to the content of their lectures.

On Wednesday, we plan an excursion to the Curonian Spit.

On Friday, instead of a tutorial session, we plan a Poster Session. During this session participants will have an opportunity to present either their on-going work, or their PhD plan to the lecturer and receive a feedback.

Target audience

The target audience are master students, PhD candidates, PostDocs or other interested people with some background in mathematics or computer science. Prior knowledge of lattices will not be assumed. However, the attendees should be comfortable with basic linear algebra, algorithms and probability theory.

20€ (or 1500 ₽) + 30 € (or 2250 ₽) if you want to attend the excursion on Wednesday

You can pay the fees on-line. Alternatively, you can pay in cash upon arrival on Monday, July the 15th, during the registration. If you need a bill, you should pay online. Payments for the social event will be collected in cash on Monday during the registration.

By Plane

Kaliningrad has one international airport "Khrabrovo". There are daily direct flights from Riga (Latvia), Warsaw (Poland), Minsk (Belarussia), as well as several flights per day from Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The complete list of destinations can be found here. The airport is located 45 min. from the city main train station. There is a bus service every 40 min, the schedule can be found here. The tickets can be purchased from a bus driver. There are also taxis, the price rates can be found here.

By Bus

The European bus line ECOLINES has direct conntections on daily basis from several cities in Poland. It takes ~8h. from Warsaw, ~4h. from Gdansk.

By Train

If you want to get a flavour of famous Trans-Siberian Railroad Journey, you can take a train from Moscow (one train per day, ~20h.) or from Saint Petersburg (one train per day, ~27h.), the tickets can be purchased here. In this case, you must be eligible to enter Schengen zone as the train goes through Lithuania.

In Kalinigrad

Local currency is Russian Ruble ₽. There are plenty of currency exchanges in the city. You can easily exchanges euros, US dollars, British Pounds, Swiss Francs to Russian Ruble. Other currencies may not be accepted for exchange in some places.

Tickets for local transportation within the city can only be purchased in cash when you are inside a bus or a train (there are no vending machines). One-ride ticket costs 24 ₽.
